Common Types Of Retaining Walls

Timber Retaining Walls

Timber retaining walls stabilise sloped ground using treated softwood or durable hardwood posts and rails that blend naturally into gardens. They are cost effective, quick to install and flexible in layout. Because timber can be vulnerable to decay and termites over time, correct hazard treatment, gravel backfill and drainage behind the wall are essential. Best suited where warm natural aesthetics and moderate wall heights are the priority and owners accept periodic maintenance.

Brick and Rock Retaining Walls

Brick and natural stone walls deliver classic style and structural strength. Mortared brick provides a uniform appearance, while rock or boulder walls offer a rustic look that integrates with planting. Both materials are highly durable, resistant to weathering and require less maintenance than timber. Proper drainage weep holes or aggregate backfill further extend service life.

Concrete Sleeper Retaining Walls

Concrete sleeper systems give robust, low maintenance support for cut and fill sites. Galvanised steel H and C posts secure precast sleepers that resist rot, termites and fire. Smooth or textured finishes can mimic natural stone or timber. They are suited to higher walls, tight access and boundary lines where longevity and straight lines matter.

What Are The Benefits Of Building A Retaining Wall

Improved Drainage: Retaining walls can be designed with proper drainage systems to redirect water away from the retained soil. This also helps prevent water buildup behind the wall, reducing the risk of soil saturation and prevent soil erosion.

Aesthetic Appeal: Material and colour options create visual interest and define garden zones.

Functional Use of Space: Terracing converts slopes into usable areas for lawns, seating or planting beds.

Planting Opportunities: Tiered levels allow layered planting that increases biodiversity and greenery.

Questions before getting started? Get in touch.

  • Pricing depends on wall length and height, material type, excavation depth, site access and drainage complexity. A site visit lets us measure and provide an accurate fixed quote.

  • Simple quotes are usually issued within a few business days after inspection. Complex engineered walls may take up to two weeks if soil reports or design drawings are required.

  • Retaining walls hold back soil on sloped or stepped sites, preventing erosion and creating level terraces.

  • Common materials include treated timber, concrete sleepers, brick, natural stone and engineered block systems. Selection depends on height, budget and desired appearance.

  • All projects are overseen by owner Greg Hair and our experienced structural landscaping team.

  • Keep drainage outlets clear, inspect annually for movement, repair damaged capping and remove invasive roots. Prompt attention prevents costly structural issues.

  • Typical residential walls require twenty to thirty labor hours. This work happens over several days. It includes excavation, footing cure, construction, and backfilling.

  • In NSW, many non-structural landscape walls can go right up to the boundary if they are under a certain height. However, engineered structural walls usually need setbacks, often around 900 mm, or must have neighbor consent. Always confirm current council rules before starting.

  • Well-drained concrete sleepers, strong blocks, and quality stone walls provide great durability. They often last for decades with little maintenance.

  • Yes. Even low walls need free draining backfill and, where appropriate, perforated pipe to relieve water pressure.

  • Yes. We hold public liability insurance (currently up to twenty million dollars) and the required structural landscaping licences.

  • Treated pine is the most popular timber choice for retaining walls due to its strength, affordability, and availability.
